An Interview with Bharat Sidda by Stone and Tile India

Over a span of more than 12 countries, quality factories and one of the largest processing units in the country, KSG is a 100 per cent export-oriented unit. Its stones come directly from its quarries and are processed at its factories using Italian state-of-the-art machinery.

With a workforce of over 1,200 employees, KSG provides a full range of products in a variety of sizes — rough blocks, gangsaw slabs, cutter slabs, tiles, cut-to-size and counter tops. Its production capacity totals around 2,800,000 sq. m of gang saw slabs, 1,200,000 sq. m of small slabs, 26,000 sq. m of Black Galaxy and 11,400 cu. m of other colours every year.

The Stone and Tiles in India (STI) team recently interviewed Mr. Bharat Sidda, one of the scions of the Sidda family, to have an understanding of the meteoric rise of the company and to get an insight into the pros and cons of joining a family business.

Below are excerpts from this interesting interaction.

STI: What are your company’s success factors?

KSG’s key success factors are its high production capacity, its risk-taking ability and its outstanding quality.

STI: Where does your company’s strength lie?

KSG’s core strength lies in its aggressive, well-researched approach, its foresight in identifying the right mix of resources and raw materials, and in adopting the best available technology. Our strength also lies in high-quality standards and our ability to understand customers’ needs and preferences.

STI: Do you go the extra mile to support your customers? If yes, what kind of efforts do you put in and what expert guidance do you give to support your customers?

At KSG, we treasure value addition. Quality and quantity are our strongholds. We constantly ensure that our clients get the best value for money. We attach a lot of importance to customer service and after-sales service. You cannot leave your competitors behind if you do not really care for your customers. To win customer loyalty, we give personal attention to all our customers.

STI: How do you see your company evolving in future?

At KSG, we develop capacity for our customers while also understanding their unique priorities and needs. We try to foresee customer relationships with our customers. Also, we make it easy for customers to ask questions and give their opinion about the company’s products or colours. We respond to customer requests and complaints and concerns. We also appreciate our customers by implementing systems of loyalty. When customers share feedback, we ensure we respond and act accordingly.

STI: How equipped are your facilities?

KSG has two strategically located processing centres. One of them is just 7 km from the port and has dual gangsaw lines. Both are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology. All units have Italian machinery including Gaspari Menotti gangsaws, Breton polishing lines, CMS Brembana CNC machines and state-of-the-art handling systems. The total capacity of processing plant is 5,000 sq. m per month.

STI: What are your future targets?

Our multi-site production units will be further strengthened with more advanced machinery. Multi-colour production is our commitment to our customers. We will therefore continue investing in resources and technology to enhance our capacity and efficiency.

STI: It is said that we must go where the market is…

Yes. Business has always fascinated me, mainly because it was in my blood. I was not brought into the industry; I was born into it. My upbringing became my learning ground. I had been working in the industry for several years before I formally joined KSG. I was born to lead the company’s growth and further expansion.

STI: What are the advantages and disadvantages of joining family business?

There are many advantages and disadvantages of joining a family business. However, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Problems are inevitable in any business. But when you understand the strength of your relationship and learn to work together, you can overcome challenges. Family businesses encourage unity and responsibility.
